Adoption of Conservation Agricultural Practices among Maize Farmers: An Alternative Livelihood to Mitigate Climate Change Impact in Bawku Municipality, Ghana

The plight of farmers are worsening by the impact climate change. This is evident in all agro-ecological zones Ghana. Warming and variability rainfall pattern causing floods long dry spells drought with resultant effects reduced food crop livestock production. Conservation Agricultural (CA) practices was therefore introduced to address challeges conventional tillage. CA has been identified as a substitute agriculture for sustainable agricultural productivity. objective study assess rate adoption Bawku Municipality Upper East region conducted Municipal area research design used mixed methods. purposive sampling technique Ito select major where conservation occurs region. simple random ten (10) communities Municipality, whilst systematic forty (40) respondents from each community study. target population maize Municipality. In all, total 358 were interviewed Data taken on socio-cultural socio-economic characteristics respondents. analysis done using Statistical Package Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics, such frequencies, percentages, means computed. Cross tabulations variables also computed chi-square tests establish relationships. revealed that age, sex, level education, religion, household size, government policy, access credit, source income, farm extension services found have significantly influenced practices. results indicated majority aware had knowledge about “No-tillage cover crops, minimum tillage rotation crops” main area. further reduces soil erosion, increases fertility, organic matter improves survey reveals 81% adopted full. It recommended Ghanaian should boost instituting an annual nation award scheme hardworking practioners
